When my wife and I moved to Alaska in 2002, we lived in a remote and beautiful native village called Eagle.  This village is on the mighty Yukon river and has been the home of the Han Indians for thousands of years.  It was clear that this place was one that provided what was needed to survive in a land that is harsh and unforgiving.  As we spent more time in this unique part of the world, we began to feel a connection to it.  In naming our kennel, it only seem fitting to look to the past and to the land for the answer.

Prior to 1843 the Han Indians had never seen a white man or at least not many.  They refered to the area that is known today as Eagle village as klat-ol-klin.  This was simply how the white man translated what they heard the Natives saying when they described their camp on the Yukon river.  As the white man started flowing into the klat-ol-klin area, it later became known as David's camp, Johnny's village and finally Eagle village.

It is very common to name a German Shepherd kennel after a place, so what better name could we pick than one that represents a historic place with some of the toughest and most adaptable people on the planet.  A place that has provided so much for so long.  Also a place that will forever be special for myself and my family.  That is how we came to name our kennel KLATOLKLIN K9.  It is also why we strive to breed a German Shepherd that is tough, adaptable and genetically sound.  We have a saying in bush Alaska - "whatever works".  If it does not work, we have no use for it as it could cost us our life.  So when you buy a GSD from us, you can be sure that we are breeding from select bloodlines that will work.  We would not count on a piece of equipment that could fail us in the bush and we apply that same standard to the German Shepherds we produce.

Thank you for visiting our site and your interest in our German Shepherds!
